Stephen Ministry

What is Stephen Ministry?
Stephen Ministry is a program of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center pastoral care department that trains volunteers to provide distinctively Christian one-on-one care to patients and family members in our hospital.

What are a Stephen Minister's opportunities?

TRAINING:

  • Receives 50 hours of initial training.
  • Is commissioned as a Stephen Minister after completing initial training.
PARTICIPATION:
  • Participates in bi-monthly support and supervision meetings.
MINISTRY:
  • Visits a patient regularly for one hour a week. Serves for at least one year after the initial training.

Who can serve as a Stephen Minister?
Stephen Ministry is a volunteer program that is open to anyone who is gifted for caring ministry. Stephen ministry is for committed Christians who feel a special burden for hospital ministry.

What do Stephen Ministers do?
Stephen Ministers:

  • Listen
  • Explore feelings
  • Pray
  • Share the love of God
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Be someone who cares and trusts God with the results
What kind of people do we care for?
  • Facing illness or surgery
  • Receiving long-term care and/or rehabilitation
  • Experiencing loss as they age
  • Grieving
  • In a crisis
  • Caring for a family member or loved one in the hospital
  • Going through a crisis of child birth/death
