Sleep Affects Quality of Life
The Sleep Disorders Center at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is a fully accredited center and member of the American Sleep Disorders Association since 1988 specializing in the diagnosis, treatment and support of patients with sleep/wake disorders. It offers a full range of diagnostic services to identify problems with insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness and abnormal sleep behaviors.
Diagnostic Evaluation
Evaluation of patients with sleep/wake disorders begins in the Sleep Center's Clinic with a comprehensive medical/sleep evaluation by one of the center's three board certified sleep specialists. The evaluation will included the taking of a complete past medical history, a sleep history and a complete or partial physical examination. Also, consultative evaluations may be obtained by specialists from other fields, such as behavioral medicine or cardiology. After compiling all of the necessary information, the physician will decide if polysomnographic diagnostic testing is indicated.
Routine polysomnography (a diagnostic function of the Center's Sleep Lab) includes continuous monitoring during the patient's sleep of electrooculographic (eye movement), electromyographic (muscle), and electroencephalographic (brainwaves) activity. Also monitored are limb movements, respiratory rate, airflow, chest and abdominal respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, heart rate and rhythm. When indicated, the physician may request special procedures to monitor other parameters such as nocturnal penile tumescence or gastroesophageal reflux. A complete polsomnographic evaluation typically involves one to two nights of monitoring and may be followed by daytime naps in some instances.
Treatment and Management
The Sleep Center staff includes physicians and health care professionals from fields of neurology, otolaryngology, polysomnography, behavioral medicine, pulmonary medicine, respiratory therapy and urology. Through weekly review of each case, the committee determines the best plan for further evaluation, treatment and management of each patient.
Physician Involvement
The referring physician is welcome to attend the weekly conferences and receives a full written report from the staff at the completion of the patient's evaluation. The report summarizes all findings, makes a differential diagnosis and offers treatment recommendations. Treatment of the patient may be handled by the Center's staff, one of its consultants, or the referring physician.
