Cardiothoracic surgery involves the surgical treatment of diseases affecting organs inside the chest including lungs, chest wall, esophagus and diaphragm.
Cardiovascular surgery and cardiothoracic surgery are separate surgical specialties. Cardiovascular surgery refers to surgery of the heart and great vessels, and cardiothoracic surgery generally refers to surgery of the chest other than the heart.
