Emergency Medicine
What would you do in a medical emergency? Although we don’t like to think about that, it’s good to be prepared … just in case. Keep a list of loved ones’ names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, current medication (dosage and schedule) and insurance information. Also know if they have a living will. You or a family member will be asked for this information upon arrival at the Emergency Room at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
Call 911
Teach everyone in the family, including young children, to dial 911 in an emergency. When you reach the emergency operator, be calm, speak clearly, and explain what the emergency is and your location. Stay on the line.
Keep emergency numbers handy
Keep emergency numbers on hand, or program your phone to speed-dial numbers such as 911; Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, (865) 541-1111; your doctor; the fire department; poison control; the veterinarian, and close neighbors or friends. If you leave your children alone or with a babysitter, always post a number where you can be reached.
Know CPR
Local organizations offer classes in basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. If you're already certified, keep your skills up-to-date with refresher courses.
Have a first-aid kit
Ideally, a kit should include bandages, gauze, adhesive tape, disinfectant, cotton balls, pain reliever (aspirin or ibuprofen), antibacterial and antifungal ointments, scissors, tweezers, antacids, antihistamines, thermometer, icepacks and elastic bandages.
Putting together as many items as possible will help greatly in the case of an emergency.
